The waterproofing of basements and cellars is more commonly known by the term Basement Tanking. It involves a completely waterproof membrane to be applied over a masonry surface and this is done in order to prevent any water from entering which can leave devastating results when it comes down to basement conversion.

When basement tanking is being carried out it is very important that it is carried out according to the code of practice which will therefore require a surveyor to design a specific waterproofing system, BS8102:2009 which lays out protection of structures against water from the ground. The specifically designed systems however sometimes are not inclusive for any water that arises from leaking drains although sometimes the system may deal with this it is not always the case.

Unfortunately those that do not follow the above regulation come with no guarantee probably and this means that if there is water entry from the ground resulting in flooding then it is more than likely that this problem has arisen because the basement conversion has actually disregarded the drainage system. The main reason why the drainage system may have been disregarded is due to cutting down the costs of the project but basement tanking when carried out properly includes membranes which are actually incorporated into the structure.

When the membranes are incorporated into the structure this can be either outside, inside or even cleverly sandwiched between masonry components.
